Dear Students and Colleagues

Congratulations to the 2023-2034 graduates!! I look forward to celebrating with you.

As we reach the end of another incredible semester, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the milestones we have achieved together. This year, we began with a renewed focus on building and strengthening the Division of Student Affairs, amplifying our efforts to help students embark on a lifetime journey of growth and self-exploration. By aligning our initiatives with the ACPA/NASPA competencies, we ensured that our work reflected national best practices and was closely aligned with the University’s strategic plan.

Our vision for a vibrant campus life, where every student feels supported and engaged, guided our actions throughout the year. We committed to creating an environment that fosters personal development, community involvement, and academic excellence. The remarkable progress we have made is a testament to our collective dedication, the tireless efforts of staff within the division, and the collaborative spirit of our campus partners.

Key Initiatives and Achievements

  1. Food Pantry Grand Opening: We began the academic year by inaugurating the Food Pantry. This initiative has addressed food insecurity on campus and fostered a sense of community and support among our students.
  2. Student Community and Engagement: Our mid-year survey revealed that two-thirds of students living in the residence hall feel like part of our community, and 85% reported positive relationships with their Resident Assistants (RAs). This sense of belonging is essential for creating a vibrant campus life where we learn from each other’s diverse backgrounds and experiences. We also saw a remarkable increase in student engagement across various events and programs, including the Student Leadership Conference, BSG Late Night Events, and student organization leader engagement. Beginning July 1, the Center for Gender & Sexual Diversity (CGSD) will transition to operate within the Student Union, Leadership, and Activities (SULA) portfolio, allowing for more direct programming and support for LGBTQIA+ students, aligning closely with our mission of fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment.
  3. Professional Development: Our SA Professional Development Series provided our staff with ongoing training and development opportunities. This commitment to continuous learning and professional growth was further evidenced by the successful launch of the Student Affairs Learning Series, equipping our staff with the latest knowledge and skills to better serve our students.
  4. Student Communication and Marketing: We established a division-wide student communication and marketing team, revolutionizing how we connect with our students, ensuring they are informed, engaged, and empowered.
  5. Mental Health and Wellbeing: We intensified our focus on mental health and wellbeing by directing mental health funds to support critical programs and services and launching the university-wide Campus Wellbeing Committee.
  6. Engaged Eagle Program: Explore, Awareness, Growth, Leadership, and Excellence! This initiative provides opportunities for students to support growth, and preparation for employment and continued education.
  7. Campus Safety and Security: We celebrated the reaccreditation of our University Police, reflecting our relentless pursuit of excellence in campus safety and security. SUNY Brockport also received the 2023 Campus Prevention Network (CPN) Seal of Prevention, recognizing our comprehensive approach to creating a safe and supportive campus environment.

Looking Ahead

As we look ahead, we remain committed to these guiding principles and goals. Our efforts this semester have laid a strong foundation for continued growth and excellence. We will carry forward the momentum, ensuring that our campus remains a place where every student can thrive and pursue their passions.
