Dear Colleagues, Thank you for the work you do! I appreciate each and every one of you because you continue to show up for our students every day! Club Craze was a huge success! Congratulations to Rebecca Lemus, Coordinator for Student Clubs and Orgs, and the SULA team for their work in making Club Craze an exciting and meaningful experience for students. Residential Life was present and visible in pink shirts at the men’s and women’s basketball game to support annual fundraiser Play4Kay. The Play4Kay initiative is a nationally recognized event to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Yow, the former women’s basketball head coach at North Carolina State helped create the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to assist those battling breast cancer. If you were in Tuttle, you saw the student section all decked out in pink, cheering on our student athletes. I am excited to see Student Affairs’ impact across campus, and I look forward to attending more campus events throughout the semester. Prioritizing the student experience is what we commit to doing every day throughout the year, and during the month of February, we have opportunities to pause and direct our attention to the unique and lasting contributions of the Black community. This month, I attended an adaptation of Tarell Alvin McCraney’s “The Brother Size,” directed by Reenah Golden at the Avenue Black Box Theatre in Rochester. The play illustrates the journey of three Black males navigating brotherhood, incarceration, racism, and what it means to be free. Influenced by the rich culture of the Yoruba people of West Africa, the play provides an intersectional approach to understanding the multifaceted lived experiences of Black males. What made this play even more dynamic was seeing a former Brockport student shine on stage. Members of the student affairs division journeyed to SUNY Geneseo to attend a presentation by Angela Davis, a renowned Activist, Educator, Author, and Scholar, where she shared her insights and experiences. This event was part of SUNY Geneseo’s Heritage Month Speaker Series. On February 29, the African American Studies Department at SUNY Brockport will host its annual MLK Speaker event. Dr. Lerone Martin, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Centennial Professor in Religious Studies and Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University, will offer his expertise on the Black experience in connection to life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. I encourage you to continue to join me in recognizing and celebrating these achievements and more through the many Black History Month events on campus and in our broader community. Our presence and engagement matter as we work towards cultivating a community that is safe and welcoming to all. Campus Focal Point As we move forward into the new year and the spring semester, students will benefit from your support in keeping them on pace with planning for their upcoming academic, housing and job needs. WELCOME TO DIVISION OF STUDENT AFFAIRS Hazen Center for Integrated Care: Brianna McMaster, Basic Needs & Pantry GA SULA: Ashley Cook, Civic Engagement GA Markyana Kelly, Student Leadership Assistant (Undergraduate student role) STAFF RECOGNITION Jennifer Bianco, Administrative Assistant 1 Hazen Center for Integrated Care Accomplishments: Jen is a friendly, fun, dependable and essential member of the Hazen team. She keeps track of the day-to-day business details of operations for three ADs, the director and supports individual team member requests as needed. Jen has contributed to improving the look and feel of Hazen Hall by sorting through and removing clutter throughout the building leaving it organized and more inviting. Most recently, while Hazen leadership focused on opening the Pantry, Jen assumed responsibility of planning, advertising, and executing the Hazen Health and Wellness Fair. As a result, over 200 students stopped in to visit with Roc Dogs and gain more awareness of health resources in our community. We are grateful for her teamwork and can-do attitude! GREEN & GOLD January 2024: Julie Pettit, Clinical Coordinator & Senior Counselor, Counseling Center Michelle Kuleszo, Director of Hazen Center for Integrated Care Green & Gold Star Award Nomination for Faculty & Staff (brockport.edu) DIVISION HIGHLIGHTS University Police Receives Re-Accreditation University Police achieved its 1st re-accreditation from the NYS Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council. University Police is pleased to announce that it received its 5-year re-accreditation from the NYS Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council. The Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Program is voluntary and designed to improve an agency’s effectiveness, efficiency, and professionalism; promote training and foster public confidence in law enforcement. UPD has been an accredited agency since 2018 and will now be accredited through 2028. Of about 500+ police agencies in New York State, only about 165 agencies are accredited. SUNY Brockport received the 2023 Campus Prevention Network (CPN) Seal of Prevention. SUNY Brockport has received the Seal of Prevention award since its beginning in 2020, marking the third year of being an honoree. The CPN Seal of Prevention represents the highest standard for online prevention education and recognizes institutions making a measurable impact across critical areas including sexual assault prevention, relationship abuse, alcohol and drug misuse, mental health, and inclusion. The CPN Seal of Prevention highlights the hard work SUNY Brockport is undertaking to create a safe and welcoming campus community for students. Annually, the CPN research team assesses the quality of institutions and organizations’ digital programming measured by rigorous criteria based on two decades of prevention research to determine eligibility for the Seal. The Student Mental Health Emergency Fund program is back this spring semester and will continue through the 2024-2025 academic year, as funds are available. SUNY Administration awarded SUNY Brockport nearly $48,000 to support students struggling with mental health conditions that places a financial burden on them. Mental Health Emergency Funds are grants of up to $500 awarded to eligible students who are experiencing an unforeseen hardship or crisis that has impacted their mental and emotional well-being. The grants must be used solely for mental health services including:
Students must be registered and attending the semester in which they apply and must fulfill all requirements outlined in the online application. This initiative is a partnership between the Division of Student Affairs and the Division of Advancement & Communications.
