Fine Arts General Education Rubric

SLO

  • Demonstrate an understanding of at least one principal form of artistic expression and the creative process inherent therein.

Performance-oriented courses should engage students in the creative process directly while also fostering broader understanding of the principal form of artistic so that these courses satisfy NYSED requirements for liberal arts and sciences. Courses imparting
purely technical skills with no demonstration of the broader understanding do not meet the ARTS GE requirements.

SLO has been separated into two discrete elements for measurement of student achievement. Average the scores for each row of the rubric and use the average to sort students into the appropriate performance category. See example below.

Learning Outcomes Exceeds (10-9) Meets (8.9-8) Approaches (7.9-7) Does Not Meet (6.9-0)
Form - Demonstrate an understanding of at least one principal form of artistic expression Demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the artistic form, including technical and aesthetic elements, structure, and role in society  Demonstrates a coherent understanding of the artistic form, and the ability to identify the function and relationship of its technical and aesthetic components Demonstrates a basic understanding of the artistic form, as an informed viewer/reader/
audience
Demonstrates a poor understanding of the artistic form, with no awareness of its elements or value
Process - Demonstrate an understanding of the creative process inherent in a form of artistic expression Skillfully and persuasively demonstrates an understanding of techniques and working methods that can be used to produce a chosen art form or design, demonstrating an understanding of aesthetic principles and/or functional demands Adequately demonstrates an understanding of techniques and working methods that can be used to produce a chosen art form or design, demonstrating awareness of aesthetic principles and/or functional demands Demonstrates some simple understanding of techniques or working methods that can be used to produce a chosen art form or design, demonstrating little awareness of aesthetic principles and/or functional demands  Unable to demonstrate an understanding of technique or working methods that can be used to produce a chosen art form or design

Benchmark: 100% of students should meet or exceed standards
Give students a score for each row of the rubric, convert to a 100-point scale, and average the scores. Use the average to sort students into the appropriate performance category.

Example:

Learning Outcome Score
Form 8/10 = 80
Process 9/10 = 90
Total 170/200
Average 85 (Student meets)
