Recommendations for Theatre (THE) Majors

Students are exploring who they are, what they are interested in, if they are in the right major, what potential career paths exist.

TAKE a career interest survey
INVESTIGATE what other major/minors may be a good fit by attending the Majors/Minors fair
ATTEND Geva Theatre events (free professional productions in Rochester; participate in Theatre Talks and Workshops on campus)
ATTEND Department Theatre Productions and get to know faculty outside of the classroom
WORK on a production crew or in the scene/costume shop
AUDITION for season productions
MEET with your department advisor to begin planning your theatre major and Brockport experience

Students begin developing a professional demeanor, learning career options, and participating in activities relevant to the profession.

CONTINUE developing your theatre practices by following the advised course sequence
ATTEND Careers for the Common Good’s Job, Internships and Volunteer fair
SIGN UP for Geva Theatre and Strong Museum of Play interviews to begin exploration of your professional internship to take place your junior or senior year
PARTICIPATE in the KCACTF Regional Theatre Festival (January); take workshops, perform, showcase your design or SM portfolio
SEEK opportunities to study, perform or tech theatre beyond the campus (summer stock and other professional training programs)
PERFORM in a show or participate in tech/crew or in the scene/costume shop for season productions
JOIN a club; consider Harlequins Theatre Club

Students complete opportunities to distinguish themselves from others through research, internships, volunteer work, education abroad, etc.

PARTICIPATE in a Geva Theatre or Strong Museum of Play internship
OBTAIN a leadership position on campus
LEARN how to document and present your work professionally (design/SM portfolio, video auditions)
CONSIDER a work-study position in the department
BEGIN planning for your Capstone
PRESENT your work at Scholar’s Day, SURC, or the KCACTF Regional Theatre Festival
IDENTIFY summer workshop opportunities and apply for Lipson Summer Study grant
BOOK an acting job or tech theatre/design/SM position beyond the campus (summer stock, theatre festival, etc )

Students polish and refine their job materials and prepare for entry into the job market/grad school.

COMPLETE your Capstone and presentation to faculty
CONNECT with alums in the field in preparation for professional work
CREATE an acting resume or design/SM portfolio
AUDITION at Geva Theatre for their upcoming season
CONSIDER URTA auditions and interviews for Graduate School or professional work
UTILIZE ArtSearch to seek out professional teaching, acting, and production opportunities to begin your theatre career

Theatre Students spend 1/3 of their time actively making theatre. Our close-knit department gives students ample opportunity to work in four annual productions.
