Vice President News from Jackie Clark
There are two Town Halls today regarding the upcoming Solar Eclipse Event on Campus – please join us to learn about the plans, events, and activities surrounding the April 8 Total Solar Eclipse (times & locations noted at bottom).
An early spring? Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow last Friday morning – which is great news for this original “down-stater.” However, with only a 39% accuracy rate, we shall have to wait and see if he was correct!
Departmental News
Facilities Maintenance & Operations’ Parking & Transportation Services (FMO/PTS)
New to PTS: Kathy Fanning, OA1. Kathy began her role with PTS summer 2023. While new to PTS, she is not new to the University, having six years with Housekeeping. We are thrilled to have her join our team and enjoy the sunshine she brings to our office.
Resignation: Claire Golden, OA1, has resigned her position. This position remains vacant at this time.
Pending Retirement: Dave Sevor, Sr Parking Attendant, has announced his retirement; his last day is April 1. Dave spent the majority of his career at Eastman Kodak Company, assigned to the Industrial Security team, and served his community as a police officer in Holley, NY. As we reflect on Dave’s 10 years with SUNY Brockport, here are some fun key indicators related to Dave’s activities:
- Motorist Assistance Program (MAPs): This program lends a hand to those who are in need of tire inflation, lock deicer, vehicle jump-start, lock-out and gas transportation (the last two are no longer offered). Over the last 10 years, Dave and his team have reacted to over 5,700 calls.
- Enforcement Activity: 66,771 citations issued (with photos).
- Event Coordination: Planning, quote for services, assignments, space reservation with set-up and tear-down, sign creation with placement plan, audits, and more – in the hundreds!
- Supervision: hired, scheduled, and trained approximately 120 students.
- Parking meters: Emptied and performed preventive maintenance and repair approximately 3,200 times.
- Other activities: cleaning bus shelters, serve as back-up in the event of a bus breakdown, space audit counts, pay station maintenance, signage inventory, ordering, and placement, parking truck upkeep, assistance with clerical work in downtime, putting up with Johnna for over 30 years, and more.
We will miss Dave’s sense of humor, stories, commitment, and friendship. Help us wish him the best and thank him for his many years of amazing service.
Brockport Information Technology Services (BITS)
Members of our community provide personal information about themselves to criminals. They give money to scammers. They provide personal and work account access to malicious actors. Why do they do this? Most of the time, it starts with a phishing email. Several factors contribute to these specific incidents that occur at SUNY Brockport:
- Rushing to get through emails quickly without fully reading them.
- Being eager to help supervisors.
- Excitement about a potential opportunity.
- Desire to share information about potential opportunities.
There are several key actions that will prevent phishers from being successful at SUNY Brockport:
- Read and check before acting. Pay special attention to warning messages displayed on campus emails.
- Question unusual requests from supervisors in person or by calling them. Especially when requests involve gift cards or crypto currency.
- Verify the identity of any person or employer offering an opportunity.
- Don’t forward offers to others unless they can be verified as legitimate.
These things sound simple and easy. People often roll their eyes to me at how simple it sounds. But I swear to you these are the factors and solutions almost every single time.
