Vice President News from Ian Harper

I hope everyone is well and staying warm as the first snow of the season fell this week. Many thanks to Facilities Maintenance & Operations staff who have been out in the cold clearing the roads and footpaths, it is much appreciated.

It is hard to believe that this is the last newsletter of the year, this year seems to have flown by, but it’s certainly been a year that we can all be proud of. Reviewing the newsletters throughout the year is a tremendous reminder of all the great things you have achieved, the awards won, the events you have put on, and the events you have supported; it “takes a village.” The University could not achieve the success it does without all the hard work and dedication of all of you; many, many thanks.

I had the opportunity to provide an update on the current financial situation of the University at recent College Council, JPBC, and Budget Town Hall meetings. It was a good opportunity to share the journey the University has been on and how we are performing against our sister institutes, providing a glimpse in how we see the future shaping up. If you were unable to attend any of those sessions, a recording of yesterday’s Budget Town Hall meeting will soon be available to view online; watch the Daily Eagle for that announcement. In a nutshell, the University has made strong progress financially over the last three years, reducing our structural deficit by $8M, supported by fantastic enrollment growth and improving student retention rates. We are anticipating that we will transition from a sustained period of enrollment growth to period of enrollment stabilization.

As I mentioned, I attended College Council, which was held in Rochester at the REOC. It’s always a treat to go there and be reminded of the amazing work that Dr. Roosevelt Mareus and his team are doing to support our local community.

BASC is currently working on an exciting three-year dining strategy. This will involve redesigning the Harrison dining experience, augmenting the student meal plans, modernizing the dining facilities in the Square, and revamping the campus store. Bill McNamara, our Executive Director at BASC, shared an update on progress to the President’s extended Cabinet.

It’s with a mixture of gratitude and sadness that this will be the last newsletter that Laurie Smith will be working on, as she moves into the next phase of her life’s journey. Laurie will be retiring at the end of year. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Laurie for the amazing support, dedication, and friendship she has given since I joined the University, thank you so much.

However, this does give me the opportunity to introduce you all to Bonnie Bradley. Bonnie joined the Division this week as Laurie’s replacement. Please join me in welcoming Bonnie and wishing her all the very best.

Finally, I wish you all a very safe and enjoyable, festive season. Thank you for everything you do.

Brockport Information Technology Services (BITS)

BITS is proactively partnering with departments to strengthen campus security. Recent initiatives include the following:

  1. In order to streamline communication and discuss upcoming initiatives and projects, BITS has kicked off bi-weekly meetings with partners in Residential Life and University Police to strategize large scale security enhancement projects across the University.
  2. In collaboration with Facilities Planning and Construction, BITS is launching a comprehensive security modernization project across all of our spaces. These include customer-facing areas as well as securing network and data centers. Phase 1 was recently completed, adding card-access control to both the IT Service Desk in Drake and our high-value storage closet. Phase 2 will focus on the Tuttle and Dailey Hall data centers, with work scheduled over winter break and continuing into the spring semester.
  3. BITS is initiating a four-year project to modernize and upgrade security cameras throughout all of our spaces. This includes working with our campus partners to ensure that they have a path forward.

The above projects follow campus standards by utilizing our existing CBORD and FLIR lock and security camera solutions; this ensures sustainable practices by utilizing pre-existing technology solutions.

Facilities Maintenance & Operations (FMO)

FMO announces the Facilities Storage Building Groundbreaking! Construction has begun on our new Facilities Storage Building in the X Lot area. Thank you to Facilities Planning & Construction, University Administration, and Procurement and Payment Services for their support in making this project possible. The new building will provide dedicated space for storing both light and heavy equipment, helping us better protect our assets and extend their lifespan. More updates to come as the project progresses!

Facilities Maintenance & Operations / Parking & Transportation Services (FMO / PTS)

The PTS Office is excited to announce that Chris Martinez has been elected to the Board of Directors of the New York State Parking and Transportation Association (NYSPTA)! His two-year term begins January 1, 2026. Congratulations, Chris, on this well-deserved achievement.

Finance & Management (F&M)

On October 24, 2025, Finance and Management hosted Larry Moss and his team from Airigami for a staff team-building retreat. The day was fun-filled and energizing, as the team learned how to work collaboratively through balloon art. The day began with learning the art of balloon animals and transitioned into building a three-panel mural, which was later merged into one large mural. During the exercise debrief, the F&M Team discussed the importance of being flexible in your approach to projects, using the strengths of your teammates, and the importance of asking questions. There is always more than one way to accomplish a task, and it is important to be open to learning from others to reach the best end-result. After balloon art, the team had a delicious lunch catered by BASC (thank you to our BASC colleagues!).

The day then proceeded with the construction of spaghetti towers, again highlighting the strengths of collaboration and creativity in tackling a task. The retreat ended with highlighting accomplishments of individuals on the team or things we were thankful for that we felt deserved a shout-out to another teammate. Overall, it was a very rewarding and positive day!

Finance & Management / Procurement and Payment Services (F&M / PPS)

The PPS Team processed the following quantities of Purchase Orders and Vouchers/Payments from 7/1/2025 through 11/24/2025:

  • 922 Purchase Orders
  • 1,718 Vouchers/Payments

Also, the PPS Team has performed seven “open house” EagleMart Trainings which allow faculty and staff to pop by and ask questions about the eProcurement System; these events have been very well attended.
