By studying abroad, you’re earning credits towards your degree!

Enrolling in courses to fulfill degree requirements

If you are enrolling in specific courses that fulfill requirements in your chosen major, you must discuss this with your academic advisor or your major department to receive prior approval. Approval must come from filling out a Course Approval Form filed with the Academic Advisement Office prior to your departure.

Maintaining full-time status

Students that study abroad are required to maintain full-time status during the entire program abroad. For semester/academic year programs, this means you must maintain the equivalent of 12 US credits per semester.

Program costs vary and it is largely dependent on the credit awarded and length of stay. You can find the anticipated cost by visiting your desired program page. To assist you with funding your program, SUNY Brockport offers a selection of scholarships specifically for education abroad students. Moreover, students who receive financial aid may be able to use their award package towards the cost of their program.

Health & Travel Insurance

Health Insurance

By studying abroad with Brockport, you must have health and emergency assistance insurance. You will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the SUNY International Study Abroad Insurance provided by UnitedHealthcare (UHC).

Before traveling, be sure to print your insurance card using the website linked here.

Travel Insurance

The Center for Global Education and Engagement recommends you to purchase travel insurance. This purchase is separate than the international health insurance.

More information

Upon arrival at your destination, you will participate in an orientation session that’ll acquaint you with the host country. During this session, our partners’ program coordinators will provide information about local health facilities available at the program site. Additionally, coordinators will highlight a “recommended” hospital.

The mandatory health insurance policy ensures coverage for medical treatments related to illnesses or accidents that may occur during your time abroad.

Passports

You must have a valid passport book to travel abroad. Need to apply for one? Passport applications and instructions can be found here.

Visas

With a visa, you’re officially permitted to enter and lawfully remain in a country. These are granted by the authorities of your host country.

Some programs require a visa, while others don’t. It will depend on your citizenship, host country, and length of stay. Your Study Abroad Advisor will provide further guidance on this.

SUNY Brockport cannot obtain a visa for you.

Obtaining a Visa

You may need to apply for a visa weeks or months before your departure, or you can get a visa upon arrival in the country.
