Becoming Career Ready: Skills Employers Seek

What is Career Readiness and why does it matter?

Career readiness is achieved by demonstrating core competencies that will help you successfully pursue your career goals. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has identified eight core competencies (also known as transferable skills) that are highly valued by employers and considered key predictors of career success. Your experiences at SUNY Brockport and beyond offer many opportunities to develop and enhance these eight competencies, including participation in classroom projects and assignments, internships, co-ops, research, on-campus involvement, work experience, or other on- or off-campus endeavors.

Learn the Eight Core Career Competencies

Career & Self-Development

Proactively develop oneself and one’s career through continual personal and professional learning, awareness of one’s strengths and weaknesses, navigation of career opportunities, and networking to build relationships within and without one’s organization.

Communication

Clearly and effectively exchange information, ideas, facts, and perspectives with persons inside and outside of an organization.

Critical Thinking

Identify and respond to needs based on an understanding of situational context and logical analysis of relevant information.

Equity & Inclusion

Demonstrate the awareness, attitude, knowledge, and skills required to equitably engage and include people from different local and global cultures. Engage in anti-oppressive practices that actively challenge the systems, structures, and policies of racism and inequity.

Leadership

Recognize and capitalize on personal and team strengths to achieve organizational goals.

Professionalism

Knowing work environments differ greatly, understand and demonstrate effective work habits, and act in the interest of the larger community and workplace.

Teamwork

Build and maintain collaborative relationships to work effectively toward common goals, while appreciating diverse viewpoints and shared responsibilities.

Technology

Understand and leverage technologies ethically to enhance efficiencies, complete tasks, and accomplish goals.

Courses & Academic Pursuits

You are getting a SUNY Brockport degree by taking courses in your program area and, if you’re an undergraduate, through General Education requirements. Regardless of the content, remember that you are always learning, and your competencies can be enhanced in any course.

Take advantage of all they offer, then reflect on what you learned and how you can apply it to future classes, jobs, or activities.

Examples of how students developed or enhanced their competencies through coursework:

  • Raheem developed his career & self-development competency by networking with the guest speaker from his Psychology course, who is employed at a company Raheem is interested in interning with.
  • Natalie enhanced her communication competency by choosing to take Principles of Public Speaking as an elective.
  • River practiced and utilized their critical thinking competency by making decisions for a case competition within their Principles of Animal Genetics course.
  • Leo built his equity & inclusion competency by researching and writing a paper on the rights of transgender people in the workplace as part of his Legal and Ethical Environment of Business.
