2025 Foundation Awards

George Rich Student Philanthropy Award 

The George Rich Student Philanthropy Award recognizes a student who has made significant contributions to the University community in service, monetary donation, or creative works through time and/or talent, and/or inspired others to be similarly involved. As part of the process, applicants will nominate an on-campus philanthropic, educational, or cultural endeavor to receive an additional award. This award was established to honor George Rich ’54/’62, alumnus, life-long Brockport resident, and former Brockport Alumni Association President, by Rosa “Rosie” LaSorte Rich, his wife and former College Class advisor.

Kendall Miller

As a student in the 3+3 Physical Therapy program, Kendall Miller is committed to making the most of her undergraduate career by building a strong academic foundation in health sciences and gaining hands-on experience through volunteer work and clinical observation. She is the treasurer of the SUNY Brockport Best Buddies chapter, a nonprofit organization that creates opportunities for and supports families of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). When she completes her Doctorate at Upstate Medical, Kendall hopes to become a licensed physical therapist specializing in rehabilitative care. Kendall has chosen to share this award with the SUNY Brockport chapter of Best Buddies.

Josh Silber ’93 Excellence in Leadership Award 

The Josh Silber ’93 Excellence in Leadership Award was established by Josh Silber, class of 1993, was an active student leader and a dedicated alumnus here at SUNY Brockport. The award recognizes an undergraduate who demonstrates commitment and potential for excellence in leadership and service. The recipient is an entering junior or senior year student who demonstrates academic achievement and leadership skills through their extracurricular activities and of positions of leadership at the University and/or in the community.

Precious Cyril

Precious Cyril is a first-generation student from Eastern Nigeria, beginning his junior year at Brockport. When he graduates in 2027 from the Department of Nursing, he plans to start a fulfilling career in healthcare as a nurse anesthesiologist. Ultimately, he hopes to pursue an advanced degree and become a Doctor of Medicine. Since moving to the U.S. to further his education, Precious has gained valuable insights into the experiences of others navigating a new environment. This journey has helped him develop compassion and respect for people’s diverse backgrounds and stories.

Elaine Leshnower Scholarship in Social Equality Award

The Elaine Leshnower Scholarship in Social Equality Award recognizes a student leader who is committed to social equality through their on- and off-campus active involvement in activities that advance social justice, tolerance, diversity, and inclusiveness in the greater Brockport community.

Grace Olaosebikan

Grace Olaosebikan began her college career in the business administration program but discovered her true passion during her studies. She will graduate in 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and broadcasting and a double minor in digital marketing and film studies. Outside of her studies, Grace is actively involved in her community, believing strongly in the power of representation and service. She is a regular volunteer at her church, working on the media team and helping with the food pantry.

Donald and Gloria Huot Excellence in Leadership Award

The Donald and Gloria Huot Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes an entering junior or senior who demonstrates strong academic achievement and leadership skills through their services to the University and/or the greater community. This recipient is a first-generation college student who possesses respect for the power of education and understands the importance of giving back to benefit their communities. The award was established by Anne E. Huot, former Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Sharvani Regmi

Sharvani Regmi is a force to be reckoned with. An active student in the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting, she takes her studies out of the classroom by working for 89.1 The Point, Talon TV, and The Stylus. She also runs the Brockport chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists. Sharvani hopes to make history by becoming the first female international sports journalist from Nepal, representing women from developing countries and proving that the sports industry is for everyone.

Sharon D. Belle-Render Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship

The Sharon D. Belle-Render Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship recognizes a current SUNY Brockport student who demonstrates commitment to and potential for excellence in leadership at the University and/ or in the Brockport community through active involvement and service to others. The recipient also identifies as Black, African American, African, or is of Caribbean descent. This award was established by Sharon D. Belle-Render ’79/’83, alumna and emerita with a 34-year career at the University.

Ysland Brown

A first-year student in the Political Science program, Ysland Brown hopes to make an amazing name for herself at SUNY Brockport. As a passionate advocate for social change, she delivered a TED Talk on racial indifference, where she shared her personal experiences and struggles to highlight the importance of racial equality and inclusion. She also donated all the funds from her talk to the Southwest Colts football team to ensure the young women could participate in competitions without worrying about financial limitations. When Ysland graduates, her goal is to become a lawyer and prove that Black girls, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, can be more than just a statistic.

Fannie Barrier Williams Women of Courage Scholarship

The Fannie Barrier Williams Women of Courage Scholarship recognizes an outstanding student leader who demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to social justice and/or advocacy on behalf of a disenfranchised or underrepresented group, or individual. The scholarship is given in the tradition of Brockport alumna Fannie Barrier Williams, class of 1870, and the first African American woman to graduate from the University’s Normal School. The recipient is entering their junior or senior year, exhibits academic excellence, and demonstrates a future commitment to social justice through their education and career plans.

Cadence Lopez headshot

Cadence Lopez is an active member of campus Greek Life, serving as the Vice President of Operations for Delta Phi Epsilon and Panhellenic President. She helps foster an inclusive and unified Panhellenic community that uplifts and connects women across campus. When she graduates next spring, Cadence hopes to be a writer who uses the power of words to inspire, connect, and transform.

John R. Halstead Family Leadership in Higher Education Award 

The John R. Halstead Family Leadership in Higher Education Award recognizes student leaders who are rising stars who serve the University and the community, and who plan to continue their service in a future career in higher education.

Maryam Nor

Maryam Nor is incredibly active in the Brockport community, serving as the current Vice President for Student Government. She believes it can take only one person to change the world, and she chooses to be that person. When Maryam graduates next year from the Department of Communication, she hopes to become an educational mentor to underrepresented communities, providing young professionals with access to networking, professional development workshops, and mental health resources.

Garth Fagan Legacy Award

The Garth Fagan Legacy Award recognizes an exceptional undergraduate or graduate student completing a Brockport degree who exemplifies the spirit, conviction, and altruism of Garth Fagan. The award is intended for individuals who have demonstrated curious investigation, diligent action, innovative thinking, determined practices, a passion for advocacy of the arts, and the potential to make a lasting impact on the world of dance.
