Remote Proctoring Services - Respondus LockDown Browser

The University has a new option, “Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor” to proctor tests for students in online courses. The system will use your students’ web camera, microphone, and computers to proctor your tests. Respondus LockDown Browser is now embedded in Brightspace and can be used for online course mid-terms, quizzes, major tests, and finals. You can also use Respondus Monitor (which builds on the Lockdown Browser) to view your students as they complete their tests. If you decide to use this service, please add the requirement for a computer with a web camera and audio capability to your syllabus. You should also include system requirements in the syllabus. LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are available for Chromebooks, Windows, and Mac laptops and desktop computers. iPads and mobile phones cannot be used with Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.

If you have any local technology questions/issues, please call the IT Service Desk at (585) 395-5151.

Information about the system is located in our How-To Brightspace at Brockport webpage.

To use the LockDown Browser for your tests (quizzes and exams) in Brightspace, follow these steps.

  1. First, you will have to create your tests. If you have copied your course, including tests from a previous semester, you can skip this step.
  2. In Brightspace, go into Quizzes and click on the LockDown Browser tab.
  3. Click on the menu icons to the left of the desired quiz and select Settings.
  4. Select Require LockDown Browser for this exam.
  5. Once you have made this selection you will be given options to change Password Settings and Advanced Settings.
  6. Require Respondus Monitor (automated proctoring) for this exam: Students are guided through the startup process and then recorded during the online exam. Suspicious events are flagged for the instructor.
  7. Make the selections and click Save + Close.
