Tuesday, April 14 will mark this year’s Scholars Day, with the theme “A Celebration of Academic Excellence.” This all-day event will highlight student achievements in research, fieldwork, performances, and writing. Check back for updates at the beginning of the spring semester!

Special Guest
Brad Utter, Senior Historian and Curator at the New York State Museum
Brad is a recognized authority on the history of the Erie Canal, and published author of: Enterprising Waters: The History and Art of New York’s Erie Canal; a contributing author for The Champlain Canal: 200 Years of Change: Champlain Canal Anniversary Anthology (December, 2025); and a contributing author for Revolutionary New York: 250 Years of Social Change (January 2026) and has written numerous other publications. He has also served as an on-camera consulting historian for multiple documentaries, newscasts and CBS Sunday Morning.
2025 marks the two-hundredth anniversary of the completion of the Erie Canal. As the only SUNY campus located adjacent to the canal, we are excited to invite Brad Utter to Scholars Day to help us honor this part of our university’s unique heritage.

A Look Back at Scholars Day 2025
Kate Moore
Kate’s presentation featured a gripping historical depiction of the radium girls’ story: who they were, what happened to them, how they became pioneers of women’s and workers’ rights (as well as unique scientific pioneers with continuing real-world impact), and why it’s important to remember them. Her talk also featured a discussion of the creation of the book and her research process, including emotional interviews with the women’s families and her use of the women’s own first-person records.
