Leading the #1 Social Media in Minor League Baseball

Trevor Best’s ’24 internship with the Rochester Red Wings led to a role in content production after record social media growth.

A seemingly simple moment in class — when Trevor Best ’24 noticed an internship opportunity with the Rochester Red Wings on a classmate’s screen — set him on a path to securing a part-time position as a Content Producer for the minor league baseball team.

“Once I got out of that class, I visited the Red Wings website to check it out and I saw a Content Producer,” Best said. “And at the time, I was about to start applying to internships for my last semester of college, but none of the ones I had seen felt right. However, when I saw this one, I immediately thought, ‘I’m putting all my eggs into this basket.’”

“This position was my main focus. I was showing what the Red Wings are all about.”

Best, a double major in marketing and journalism and broadcasting, utilized his Brockport connections in both fields by seeking advice from Warren Kozireski, Station Manager for WSBU 89.1 The Point, and Michael Doyle, Interim Dean of the School of Business and Management. After they both reached out to leadership at the Rochester Red Wings advocating for Best’s work ethic, he was quickly offered an interview.

“This position was my main focus,” said Best. “I was showing what the Red Wings are all about — the fun environment, the community that games bring in, and the overall vibe of the ballpark.”

Best worked as a videographer during his internship, handling tasks such as renaming footage, recording B-roll, interacting with players to create social media content, and filming full-length games.

“There were a lot of long days where I’d be there for 10-11 hours, but it didn’t bother me at all because I loved what I was doing,” Best said. “As graduation was nearing, I ended up asking my supervisor what the feasibility would be of me continuing to work there or what potential growth is like in the company. Luckily, this conversation went well and about two weeks later, I started working for them part-time.”

Drawing inspiration from the Buffalo Bills’ social media strategy, Best collaborated with his team to produce similar posts and videos to reach a broader audience. He played an integral role in boosting the Rochester Red Wings’ online presence throughout the 2024 season. He contributed to the team’s #1 social media rankings among all Triple-A MLB teams in engagement (2.67 million), video views (18.8 million), and community growth (77.9k followers).

“Our goal was to create content that went beyond just Minor League Baseball and the Rochester Red Wings,” Best said. “We wanted our social media strategy to revolve around interacting with our players. One of the first videos featured them on Media Day, where we had them sign random objects like toilet paper and even someone’s head.”

“What I’m doing doesn’t feel like work — it feels more like a hobby.”

While Best learned a lot from his classes and professors, he specifically credits Virginia (Ginny) M. Orzel for giving him the confidence and encouragement he needed to take the first step into the field.

“During my sophomore year in Intro to Film, Ginny approached me after class and said, ‘You should seriously consider pursuing this because I think you’re really talented and have a lot of potential in the industry,’” Best said. “That’s when I started believing in my talent. What I’m doing doesn’t feel like work — it feels more like a hobby. It’s baseball, something I love, mixed with my passion for production.”
