Our President of the Asian Pacific Islander Student Association (APISA), Siyon Shrestha, discusses her leadership role, the cultural impact of APISA on campus, and how the organization fosters community and inclusion among students.
Q: Can you describe the Asian and Pacific Islander Student Association (APISA)?
A: APISA is a cultural organization dedicated to promoting awareness, understanding, and appreciation of Asian and Pacific Islander cultures within the campus community. The club provides a welcoming space for students of Asian heritage — as well as anyone interested in Asian cultures — to connect, share experiences, and celebrate diversity.
We host cultural events and social gatherings that highlight both traditional and contemporary aspects of Asian cultures, including festivals, food, music, art, and history. Through these activities, we build cross-cultural understanding, foster inclusivity, and strengthen the sense of community among students.

Q: What is the club’s mission?
A: We promote awareness and appreciation of Asian cultures within the Brockport community, while cultivating a supportive space for students of Asian heritage and those interested in Asian cultures. Members will learn about, explore, and celebrate the diverse customs, traditions, and holidays of Asian cultures.
Q: What types of events does APISA host?
We host so many fun events like cultural celebrations, festivals, food-related social events, and creative/educational activities.
These events are meaningful to us because they help foster a sense of community and cultural pride. They create opportunities for students from all backgrounds to learn and experience Asian traditions in a fun and inclusive environment.
Q: How has your leadership role impacted you?
A: Being involved and taking on a leadership role in APISA has really shaped my career path. It helped me build strong skills in leadership, communication, and organization. Working with a diverse group of students taught me how to collaborate, plan events, and stay on top of responsibilities — all skills that are useful in any job.
It also strengthened my cultural awareness and ability to work in diverse environments, which is essential in today’s global business world. Taking initiative, leading discussions, and coordinating events boosted my confidence and helped me grow as a leader. Overall, my experience in APISA has guided me toward becoming a more inclusive, empathetic, and well-rounded professional.
Q: Fun fact about APISA?
A: Not a lot of students that our events often include interactive activities! This allows participants to not just watch, but truly engage with the culture.
