Project Description:

The goal of my research is to determine the feasibility of using water currents via thrusters to mitigate the prevalence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) within the nearshore area of Camp Stella Maris, Conesus Lake. Thrusters are generally used to control excessive growth of aquatic plants and for the removal of sediments and debris from the bottom of a lake, making this a new application for the technology. HABs are of particular interest due to their increase in frequency, which has led to negative effects on water quality and potential risks for public health.

Can you provide a metaphor that applies to your experience?

I grew up a sailor and learned from an early age that you can’t always sail directly on your intended course. It’s very similar in research, where you may have to steer in a different direction to find out what is working and what isn’t.
