Description
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice (DEISJ) minor at SUNY Brockport equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and lead DEISJ initiatives in a variety of organizational settings. The interdisciplinary minor responds to the needs of governmental, non-profit, and corporate organizations who increasingly seek out employees who understand the challenges and necessity of creating institutional structures that meet the needs of a diverse U.S. and international workforce and clientele/customer base.
The 18 credit hours are divided equally among required and elective courses. The required coursework includes both lower- and upper-division courses that provide a solid grounding in the social issues affecting disadvantaged groups/communities in the U.S. Elective offerings are grouped into four areas of emphasis: gender; race and ethnicity; LGBTQ+ communities; and indigenous peoples. Students complete one course across any three of these four areas, providing flexibility and further depth and breadth.
The minor serves students with an interest in diversity, equity, and social justice work who want to demonstrate to prospective employers interpersonal proficiency and leadership skills in these areas. This interdisciplinary minor pairs well with majors in many areas, including, but not limited to:
