Summer 2024

This year the Brockport Summer Learning Program served 51 students and 37 families. We continued our partnership with the First Unitarian Church of Rochester as the location for the program, which allows for many nature-based experiences and applications. We aim to provide a fun, safe, and educational learning experience to help students excel during the school year. To achieve this we ground all of our instruction in restorative practices and cultural relevancy. Activities were hands-on and project based focusing on essential skills and knowledge to help the students succeed at their learning stage.

This year, we partnered with the Rochester Ecology Partners to enhance our nature based learning. Members of the Rochester Ecology Partners worked with participants during a week-long intensive of daily lessons which culminated in a Field Study at Cobbs Hill Park. In addition to our trip to Cobbs Hill, we were able to go on weekly field studies to The Rochester Museum and Science Center, Seneca Park Zoo, and Hamlin Beach State Park.

Due to our partnership with the First Unitarian Church of Rochester, we had a wonderful group of volunteers, including our Buddy Readers who built strong connections with participants by reading and playing educational games. Our Green Crew (3go4) read The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate with two volunteers and participated in weekly discussions about the story which culminated in a viewing of the book’s movie adaptation and each participant taking home their own copy of the book.

Furthermore, we added Leadership to allow three previous participants the opportunity to act as assistants for three of the crews. They developed leadership skills and were role models for the younger participants. These three students were able to earn their Red Cross babysitting certification and learn how to sew with a sewing machine.

It was a wonderful year, and we are thankful for all of our staff, volunteers, students, partners, and families who participated.
