Description
This accelerated pathway program enables students to complete a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Addictions and Behavioral Health and an Master of Science in Education (MSEd) in School Counseling in an accelerated timeline. When qualified Brockport undergraduate applicants are admitted to the accelerated pathway program, they may take up to 12 graduate credits of coursework in School Counseling, all at the undergraduate tuition rate. These credits may apply to undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. Upon finishing all undergraduate degree requirements and graduating in good academic standing in the accelerated pathway program, students matriculate directly into the graduate program.
Admission to the Program
Admission into the accelerated pathway occurs in the student’s junior year and is highly competitive. To be considered, students must:
- Have a 3.0 overall GPA
- Successfully complete EDC 301 (Intro to Counseling)
- Complete an online application. (Students will be expected to apply for the program in fall of their junior year.)
- Submit a Statement of Objectives and Goals based on the following statement: “Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals” (ACA, 2010). Furthermore, the Department of Counselor Education at SUNY Brockport values self-reflection, taking interpersonal risks, and addressing issues of privilege, power, and difference.” In a well-developed essay of no fewer than 700, but no more than 1,200 words, describe your plans for a professional or scholarly career, and how you think our program can support your goals. We will evaluate the writing sample for content, style, and general writing ability as part of the admissions process.
- Upon acceptance into the accelerated pathway program, students will be guaranteed acceptance into the School Counseling program, provided that they maintain performance criteria as follows.
- Students must achieve a grade of “C” or better in each undergraduate HCS course. (A grade of “C-” does not meet this requirement.)
- Students must achieve a grade of “B” or better in each graduate HCS or EDC course. (A grade of “B-” does not meet this requirement.)
- Pass EDC 501/02/03 with a B or better (Condition of admission to the selected master’s program)
- The Healthcare Studies and Counselor Education faculty has a professional responsibility to deny admission or continuation in any of its undergraduate or graduate programs to any student whose level of performance and/or personal characteristics or dispositions do not adequately meet academic, professional, or ethical standards.
Program Requirements
Taking Graduate Classes as an Accelerated Degree Program Student
In their senior year, undergraduate students can take up to 12 graduate credits of coursework in School Counseling at the undergraduate tuition rate. These credits can fulfill requirements for their master’s degree once they matriculate into that program.
When accelerated degree students have fulfilled all requirements for the undergraduate major and degree, they may no longer take graduate courses at the undergraduate tuition rate. Furthermore, no more than 12 graduate credits taken as an undergraduate at SUNY Brockport can transfer into the graduate degree program and fulfill its course requirements.
Maintaining Good Academic Standing in the Accelerated Pathway Program
Accelerated pathway students must maintain a minimum overall 3.0 GPA while enrolled in the accelerated pathway program to remain in good academic standing in the program.
Students who are academically dismissed or choose to withdraw from the accelerated pathway program and can complete outstanding requirements for the undergraduate major and degree. If such a student subsequently applies for the graduate program, those credits may be applied to fulfill master’s degree requirements.
Matriculation into the Graduate Program
When undergraduate students in good academic standing in the accelerated pathway program complete the undergraduate Addictions and Behavioral Health degree, they are eligible to automatically matriculate into the Master of Science in Education in School Counseling program . All Brockport graduate academic policies will then apply.
