Nursing Education (MS)

Our flexible part-time online program emphasizes online pedagogy and leads to an Advanced Certificate in Instructional Design.

The largest, most significant shortage in nursing lies in nursing education.

One-third of nursing educators are close to retirement, according to an article published in Nursing Outlook on Retirements and Succession of Nursing Faculty in 2016-2025. Additionally, master’s and doctoral programs in nursing are not producing a large enough pool of potential nurse educators to meet the demand.

Our Master of Science in Nursing Education, with an emphasis on online pedagogy and instructional design, prepares nurse educators to work in institutions of higher learning and healthcare settings. Nurse educators will be able to utilize a variety of innovative teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of student learners, who will, in turn, educate future generations of nurses to care for individuals, families, and populations.

Graduates of the program meet the educational requirements for the National League for Nursing’s Certification for Nurse Educators (CNE) exam. Students who complete this program will also earn an Advanced Certificate in Instructional Design that prepares them for online teaching.

Curriculum

The Nursing Education (MS) is a 39-credit part-time program offered 100% online, with a required teaching internship at your place of employment or in your community*. Graduates earn their MS with an emphasis on online pedagogy, which leads to an Advanced Certificate in Instructional Design.

The curriculum encompasses learning and teaching theories, as well as their application in various instructional settings, including face-to-face, hybrid, synchronous, and asynchronous teaching and learning, as well as simulation, laboratory, and clinical environments. This program will explore the assessment, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of all learning, as well as evidence-based teaching strategies.

The MS in Nursing Education is built upon the best evidence and research produced and disseminated by the American Academy of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), and the National League for Nursing (NLN).

Career outlook

Currently, there is a shortage of nursing educators. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs will increase by 17% over the next 10 years.

Faculty typically teach, while working one day a week in practice, and then increase their hours of practice over winter and summer breaks. This not only affords additional salary but also a more flexible work schedule. Maintaining an active practice also informs classroom teaching as well as scholarship activities for nursing faculty.
