Greetings from the Dean

My name is Dr. Kathleen Peterson and I’m a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor and Dean in the School of Nursing.

We offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of many different groups of students interested in becoming nurses. Our traditional undergraduate program is a four- year program for students interested in becoming nurses. We also offer a BS to BSN accelerated program for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in another field and wish to become nurses. We have a RN to BSN completion program for associate degree prepared registered nurses who wish to continue their education and earn a BSN. Many of our undergraduate nursing applicants become successful alumni who contribute to the health and well-being of their community and return to the University when they are ready to take the next step and enroll in our graduate program. Take a few moments to review the options we offer and some of the highlights you can experience within the programs themselves.

We offer graduate programs for baccalaureate prepared registered nurses who wish to become family nurse practitioners or adult gerontology primary care nurse practitioners. Finally, we offer a terminal degree in nursing, the Doctor of Nursing Practice, for those NPs who wish to learn more about making health care change and improving the quality of care for patients and their families.

Students Interested in the Traditional Undergraduate Program

(Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students)

For new and prospective students, it is important to understand how the School of Nursing handles applications and progression into the traditional nursing program. While acceptance to Brockport is a huge step, it does not necessarily mean progression into the Nursing program. All Brockport students who intend to progress into the traditional nursing program are considered “Nursing Intents” until they have applied for progression and been accepted into the Nursing program. The program is highly competitive and has a list of pre-requisites that each student must fulfill before applying to the program.

The first two years of course work will revolve around completion of your general education requirements and pre-requisites, concluding with your application for progression into the program submitted by January. Applicants are notified of their progression status into the program by March. Questions about this program may be directed to tfarnham@brockport.edu, jarroyo@brockport.edu,or traditional_bsn@brockport.edu

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Our 30-credit post-master’s program involves five didactic courses including content relating to health care systems leadership, evaluating clinical outcomes, translating research into evidence based practice, quality improvement, and professional writing. In addition, all students will complete and disseminate a clinically-based project.

Coursework combines the flexibility of online learning with opportunities to interact remotely or in-person with supportive campus-based faculty mentors. Our program faculty remain active in clinical practice and professional leadership roles. The program can be completed one course at a time, allowing Nurse Practitioners to maintain employment while completing their DNP.
