Program Description
Healthcare professionals seek to understand the human experience as they work with patients to optimize function within an individual’s unique context. The way we see a person influences the way that we construct meaning about our observation. In many cases, educational methods for health professionals often require deconstruction of a human being into smaller units, related to specific elements of the person. Yet, best practice recommendations support a biopsychosocial approach which requires professionals to see patients holistically, within their individual contexts. The inherent ambiguity of art provides a useful medium to explore the diversity of the human experience and rethink the mental models used by healthcare professionals to truly “see” and understand the whole person better.
The purpose of the webinar is to use visual art to explore perspectives and biases of the individual and collective and to examine why such awareness is important for health professionals.
Learning Objectives
Participants will:
- Explore personal perceptual filters and their influence on meaning-making.
- Identify strategies to deconstruct conjecture and implicit bias.
- Reflect on the importance of collaboration and co-creation.
