The project examined ways to attract PFAS molecules (“forever chemicals”) to magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, so that eventually PFAS can be magnetically filtered out of water. This experience sparked Avery’s interest in sustainability and a desire to work in the materials sciences in the future, whether in waste reduction, material recycling, or environmental remediation.
Dr. Repa’s mentorship both during and outside of research has been invaluable. She continuously encourages Avery to push beyond their comfort zone, including applying for this scholarship!
