Owen Hazard

Owen Hazard, Environmental Studies major, applied for a Udall Scholarship, which grants 55 students from around the United States $7000 for educational expenses as they prepare for a career in environmental, Tribal public policy, or Native health care fields.

Applicants for the Udall Environment scholarship are evaluated on the basis of commitment to environmental policy and preparation to pursue a career in that area. Applying for this scholarship wasn’t easy, as it required creating a detailed self-profile and writing an essay on consensus, integrity, and civility—values promoted by the Udall Foundation.

However, meeting with Dr. Busch, SUNY Brockport’s Udall faculty representative, and receiving constant feedback on various parts of the application allowed for results Owen was proud of. In fact, the application process prompted Owen to reflect on teamwork in a new light, and he feels that even if he ultimately doesn’t get the scholarship, the lessons he learned while applying remain valuable.
