There are many factors to consider when selecting where you will get your degree. While many focus on cost and location, some may focus on community aspects. Zoe White searched for somewhere she was comfortable and able to thrive.
“I came to Brockport because I was looking for a campus that would allow me a safe space to learn, be myself, and grow. When looking at Brockport’s website, I noticed the effort they put into making sure their students feel accepted on campus. Brockport is the third campus I have been on, and I can say with confidence that it is the most inclusive one yet. I knew the Counselor Education program would provide me with the hands-on experiences I was looking for to hone my counseling skills,” Zoe said.
With a passion for learning and a commitment to academics, Zoe made it through the initial screening process and was selected to participate in a group interview with other candidates, where she was hand-picked by her professors and entered the School Counseling (MSEd) program.
SUNY Brockport’s counseling program has allowed her to build confidence and find her purpose. Growing up, she was unsure of exactly what she wanted to do and where she belonged. However, now in her time at Brockport, she is completely confident in the path she has chosen to take. She has gained this confidence through opportunities and experiences provided by the program.
“I started as a nursing major and ended up in psychology. Now, as a graduate student at Brockport, I am confident that I am where I am meant to be. Through hands-on experiences via internships, I am now more confident in my identity as a school counselor, and I am excited to begin my future,” said Zoe.
One recommendation Zoe would give to students interested in the program is to challenge themselves to get out of their comfort zone.
“Nearly everyone in this program is here to support you and help you become the best version of yourself,” she said.
Zoe continues in the program and anticipates graduation in 2026.
