Tell us about yourself. What did you major in and when did you graduate? And what was the topic of your Senior Honors Thesis?
I graduated from SUNY Brockport in May 2018 with majors in sociology and women and gender studies, and a minor in interpersonal and organizational communication. The topic of my Senior Honors Thesis was “Feminism: Failed or Functioning? A Study of Women’s Views on the Movement,” in which I interviewed students on their perceptions of the feminist movement.
What you have been up to since graduation?
Upon graduating from SUNY Brockport, I served for a year with AmeriCorps VISTA in Rochester, working specifically with the Rochester City School District Attendance Office. After that, I began working in higher education, working as an Administrative Assistant at SUNY Erie, then as an Academic Advisor at SUNY Genesee Community College, before coming to work here at Brockport as the Coordinator for Community Service & Civic Engagement. Throughout this time, I’ve also continued playing flute for the Brockport Symphony Orchestra.
Has your Senior thesis and/or the skills you cultivated while working on it played a role in any of your post-graduation activities or plans?
My thesis helped me hone in on the writing, organizational, and planning skills necessary to succeed in an office job. Additionally, the topic contributed toward my equity, diversity and inclusion lens which I have applied to my workplaces to ensure I’m leading as best as I can for all groups. The research and interpersonal skills that I acquired through that work have certainly helped me be a better professional.
Do you have any additional plans or goals related to your career and/or your other academic interests for 5-10 years?
Right now, I am still getting the hang of Community Service Coordination, as I am orchestrating its comeback to Brockport for the first time in nearly half a decade. I look forward to continuing to improve myself professionally with the help of my peers!
