Abstract:
In this study, we examine how microenterprises use Generative AI (GAI) and consider the ways it may affect their socio-economic development. In doing so, we revisit the established IT for Development (IT4D) model and adapt it to reflect opportunity areas and cybersecurity considerations specific to GAI. We propose the Generative AI for Development (GAI4D) model as a way to analyze both how GAI adoption may strengthen microenterprise capabilities and where it may create vulnerabilities. GAI4D highlights how GAI can both strengthen microenterprise capabilities and introduce new vulnerabilities, producing both upward and downward spirals of growth. The model offers an early foundation for researchers and practitioners seeking to understand and support GAI use in resource constrained business settings.
