SUNY Brockport Celebrates the Inaugural AI Developer Forum
On January 29, SUNY Brockport celebrated the inaugural AI Developer Forum hosted by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (SIGAI) Student Chapter.
The Generative AI Institute Team is working to develop institution-specific guidance, policies, and practices that will help our campus community use AI tools effectively, ethically, and safely.
Artificial intelligence is changing how we teach, learn, work, and solve problems. At Brockport, we are taking a thoughtful approach to ensure AI enhances our mission while upholding our values of academic integrity, equity, and student success.
We are gathering input from across campus to help build policies that work for everyone — faculty, staff, and students alike.
Our Goals
The Institute Team is focused on four key areas that will shape how Brockport approaches artificial intelligence.
We are developing institution-specific guidance and policies that address:
Safe and Secure AI Use: Practices that ensure AI tools are lawful, secure, and protect our community data and privacy.
Transparency and Accountability: Regular monitoring and clear processes for how AI is used across campus.
AI in Teaching and Learning: Guidelines for faculty use of AI in instruction and student use of AI in coursework.
Academic Integrity: Maintaining the standards that make a Brockport education meaningful.
Smart Procurement: Evaluating and selecting AI tools that align with our university mission and values.
Listen and Learn: We conducted a campus-wide survey in October-November 2025 and are meeting with departments to understand your needs and concerns.
Pilot and Refine: A larger task force will test proposed policies with small groups across campus before rolling them out university-wide.
Build Capacity: We are integrating AI-focused training into existing professional development—through SUNY AI Fellows programs, Teaching and Learning Day workshops, free Google AI certifications, and Microsoft Copilot training.
Establish Oversight: An AI Oversight Council will monitor implementation, ensure policy consistency, and adapt our approach as technology evolves.
Inclusive Access: Everyone at Brockport should have access to AI tools that can support their work and learning.
Bias Mitigation: We will audit tools for algorithmic bias and prioritize transparency in AI systems.
Universal Design: AI tools must meet accessibility standards and work for all users.
Student Data Protection: Clear policies around privacy, consent, and data ownership.
Ongoing Evaluation: Regular review of equity outcomes with adjustments based on feedback and data.
For Students: Prepare for professional, civic, and personal success in an AI-enabled world. Develop critical skills in evaluating and using AI ethically and effectively.
For Faculty: Empower pedagogical innovation and adapt teaching practices for a changing educational landscape.
For the Institution: Enhance our operational efficiency and educational offerings while maintaining academic integrity and upholding Brockport’s commitment to academic excellence and student success.
