Frequently Asked Questions

We refer to “web content and mobile applications” to describe the vast array of digital resources in use at SUNY Brockport. This includes, but is not limited to, Brightspace, internal and external websites, social media platforms, web-based applications, mobile applications, electronic files (PDFs, word documents, presentations, spreadsheets, emails, etc.), multimedia content such as videos or audio clips, images, and more.

There are limited exceptions to the new Title II rules, but digital content will largely need to comply with the required technical standard by April 2026. Exceptions generally do not apply to digital content in active use for courses or other university programs and services. Please contact the EIT Accessibility Officer for specific questions on exceptions. 

Yes, all learning materials in your course should be digitally accessible by default under the ADA Title II requirements. This is aligned with a universal design approach and benefits learners with and without disabilities.

Accommodations will continue to be necessary in many situations. However, employing a universal design approach to digital resources may alleviate the need for formal accommodations in certain circumstances.

Everyone is responsible for the accessibility of the content they create, distribute, and require the use of to access University programs and services. While we will not remediate your course materials for you, we have a range of recommended accessibility tools and accessibility training supports to help you through this process. 

Using an automated Accessibility Checker is a good starting point for determining whether your content is accessible and what can be done to fix accessibility issues. Microsoft 365 and Adobe Acrobat both offer accessibility checkers and guidance for remediating inaccessible content. For teaching faculty and staff, Brightspace Ally will evaluate the accessibility of uploaded content and provide guidance based on flagged accessibility issues.

We recommend starting with an inventory of the types of digital content you create and utilize. Prioritize remediation of digital content that you use most frequently and has the widest audience. Then, take steps to remediate the most significant accessibility issues first. Use an Accessibility Checker (ex. Microsoft 365) or Ally in Brightspace to identify issues and receive step-by-step instructions on how to fix them. Many major accessibility issues have quick and easy fixes!
