What is a Faculty Learning Community?

A faculty learning community (FLC) is structured community of practice committed by faculty and staff who want to enhance teaching, learning, scholarship, and well-being as part of the Brockport community. Each FLC will progress at its own pace, embrace a unique topic, and target specific outcomes.

What are the Benefits of a Faculty Learning Community?

  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Provide faculty and staff with exploration opportunities in a variety topics
  • Serve as a connection point for productive, long-term professional relationships
  • Encourages reflection and growth

How is a Faculty Learning Community Implemented?

  • Each learning community requires one member to serve as the facilitator. The facilitator’s job is to help the community meet its objectives by scheduling meetings, selecting readings and other material for discussion; and working with other campus stakeholders involved with faculty development to assess the effectiveness of the FLC.
  • It is expected that each FLC will meet at least 6 times per both fall and spring semester and limited to a workable size of no more than 12 members. While an FLC is recommended to run a full AY, the option of a semester only is available.
  • Communities will be selected based on the quality of the facilitator’s proposal and campus input of interest.
  • Pending campus budget approvals, limited funds will be available for FLC resources.
  • Facilitators are required to meet with the CELT Director in May and complete a short year-end report.

Facilitator Quotes

Facilitating an FLC is empowering, invigorating professionally, and you know that you are truly contributing to improving the lives of your colleagues on campus AND you get to know yourself better at the same time.

Dr. Lauren Lieberman, Professor and Distinguished Service Professor, KSSPE

Serving as an FLC Facilitator has been an energizing and rewarding experience! It brings me into regular contact with my colleagues across campus and allows me to follow up on important themes and issues that arise during our discussions. Connecting and conversing are at the heart of our FLC, and I am so grateful to be a part of it!

Ann Bunch, Professor, Department of Criminal Justice
