The Paul J. Kronthaler Memorial Prize in Chemistry honors the memory of Paul J. Kronthaler ’68, a member of the first class of chemistry majors to graduate from the SUNY Brockport. Paul was killed in action in Vietnam in 1969. The inaugural award was presented to Thomas S. Kankoski. Inscribed in the memorial plaque is a quote by then President Dr. Albert Brown “None of us know for how long or for what purpose we live or the circumstances under which we will die. Although the great potential witch Paul possessed was cut short by the tragedy of war in Vietnam…. The Days which he was allotted were well spent.”
The award is the most meaningful and honorable award the Department grants. It is given to a graduating chemistry major whose performance during his/her career at Brockport who has been outstanding in terms of academic record, laboratory assisting, research participation, and contributions to the social and intellectual life of the Department. The selection committee is composed of two faculty members and three chemistry majors not eligible for the prize in the current year. This means that student can outvote faculty, which occasionally has happened.
