Why dentistry?
Any undergraduate student intending on applying to dentistry school is encouraged to declare this minor. Our minor sets you on the course to become a dentist. It is not intended to satisfy the entire list of prerequisite courses needed to apply to dental school or take the Dental Admission Test (DAT).
Students attend dental school after they have completed their undergraduate degree. Dentistry is a four-year professional program, which is followed by a one-year residency for licensure in New York.
Admission to Dental School
In 2022, 11,180 students applied to dental schools, for most admitted students it was the second time they applied. An overall GPA of 3.49 (3.38 in sciences) is the average GPA of applicants, but the average GPA of successful applicants is 3.61 (3.54 in sciences).
Roughly 56% of applicants that applied in 2022 are now enrolled in a dental school program.
Career Outlook
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of dentists is projected to grow four percent from 2022 to 2032, with an average salary of $170,910.
