Why become a veterinarian?

Help diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) from an accredited college and license are required to practice.

Admission to veterinary school

Admission to veterinary school is competitive. There are 32 colleges in 27 states that meet accreditation standards set by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The average GPA required to gain admittance to veterinary school is 3.6. Roughly 10-15% of applicants are accepted into veterinary school.

Career outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of veterinarians is projected to grow 19 percent from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations, with an average salary of $119,100.
