Bio

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Sheyla Martínez-Rivera joined SUNY Brockport in 2025. A Certified Adapted Physical Educator (CAPE), she has taught physical and adapted physical education in both school and community settings. Before Brockport, she supported students with disabilities across Puerto Rico and the United States, with a focus on multilingual learners. Sheyla also played NCAA Division II basketball and later competed professionally in Puerto Rico for two years. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in Human Movement Studies and Special Education at Old Dominion University, where her research examines the intersection of disability, language, and cultural identity in physical education. Outside academia, she enjoys hiking, camping, and spending time with her family.
