Policy Statement

Public statements or news releases regarding SUNY Brockport should be issued through the Office of University Communications.

Purpose/Scope

All information disseminated to the news media by SUNY Brockport has the potential to shape public perception of the University. It is important that this information is vetted to ensure it accurately reflects the University’s position.

Applicability

This policy is applicable to all faculty and staff.

Policy Procedures

Any public statement about or emanating from the University carries with it the possibility of benefit or damage to colleagues and to the institution. Therefore, all public statements or news releases having to do with the University should be issued through the Office of University Communications. However, in the event that circumstances prevent such a procedure, the Office of University Communications should be informed as soon as possible of the nature of the statement.

An individual faculty or staff member of the University may publicly address any faculty, staff, or student matter, but the individual likewise has an obligation to make clear that the statement is personal and unofficial. The employee must also be willing to be mentioned by name in this connection.
