Auditing Courses at SUNY Brockport Policy

Policy Statement

Matriculated students and New York State residents who are 60 years of age or older may audit SUNY Brockport courses, subject to certain conditions, and receive neither academic credit nor grades upon completion. This policy outlines the guidelines and procedures for auditing courses at SUNY Brockport.

Purpose/Scope

Auditing a course allows a person to regularly attend and participate in a course at SUNY Brockport without formally registering for credit in the course. Auditing may be appropriate when a person is interested in the subject matter but does not have time for the commitment required for graded participation. It is the only way that persons not receiving credit, but registered for the course, are allowed to regularly attend and participate in the class.

Applicability

Eligibility for Auditing

Any matriculated graduate or undergraduate student and New York State residents 60 years of age or older, who may also be part of the University Life-long Learning program. However, auditing is a privilege, and no one can claim a right to audit any specific course at a specific time.

Definitions

Auditing a course — An option that allows matriculated students and New York Residents 60 years of age or older to attend classes, access course materials, and participate in discussions without receiving academic credit or grades upon completing the course.

Policy Procedures

A matriculated student may audit one course per semester. Auditing is not available during summer sessions or the winter term. Additionally, auditing of courses in international education, internships, field placements, or those that include patient/client contact or exposure to hazards is not permitted. Moreover, students are not permitted to obtain “credit by examination” for courses that they have audited at SUNY Brockport. New York State residents 60 or above may audit up to two courses each semester.

Auditing courses involve the following processes and conditions.

• Obtaining approval from the course instructor.
• Matriculated students will submit the Agreement to Audit a Course (Student Request) online form to the Office of Registration and Records by a matriculated student.
• NYS Residents over 60 years of age will submit the Agreement to Audit a Course (Lifelong Learning) online form to the Office of Registration and Records. The auditor will be informed of approval or denial by the Director of Intergenerational Engagement.
• By signing the auditing agreement, the auditor accepts the conditions of auditing, including earning no credit upon course completion, making no claim to register for the audited course, and earning credit retroactively. To earn credit for the audited course, the student must register for the course in a subsequent semester or summer term and complete all its requirements.
• Auditors are subject to the Codes of Student Social Conduct, the University policy on disruptive behaviors, and the Academic Integrity Policy.
• Auditors are responsible for fees and supplies associated with course enrollment.
• The extent of auditor participation in a course, including taking exams and receiving instructor feedback on papers, is entirely at the instructor’s discretion.
• If the student registers for credit in the same course that is being audited, the auditing agreement will be null and void.
• Audited courses will not be counted toward full-time registration status. Nor do they impact financial aid.
• Matriculated students need to affirm enrollment or otherwise be dropped from the audited course.
