Policy Statement

It is the policy of the State University of New York (SUNY) to issue identification cards to students at its campuses. SUNY Brockport requires all students to carry a valid SUNY Brockport identification card to ensure the safety of students and the entire campus community.

Purpose/Scope

The purpose of this policy is to require that all students possess and carry a valid SUNY Brockport identification card.

Applicability

This policy applies to all students.

Definitions

Policy Procedures

The identification card (including digital identification cards) must be presented or surrendered upon request of a duly authorized University official, including but not limited to residence hall staff, University Police, Student Affairs staff, and staff, contractors or students authorized by the University to supervise campus events, activities, and residence halls.

Individuals may be required to reveal their faces to confirm identity when needed to maintain campus safety or security. Upon request, students must show all identifying information shown on the card and/or surrender the card to the requesting official.

Intentional refusal to present or surrender a student identification card upon request by a University official; alteration or falsification of data on an identification card; creation and/or distribution of falsified identification cards; using an identification card to impersonate others; or refusal to reveal one’s face to confirm identity; are violations of this policy and may result in disciplinary action.

SUNY Brockport identification cards are provided for appropriate identification use and access to buildings and services. The cards are not transferrable and are valid as long as the holder continues their specific affiliation with the campus. A campus identification card is to be used only by the person to whom it is issued.

It is the student’s responsibility to replace the identification card if it is confiscated, stolen, lost, bent, broken, or worn beyond the point of readability by University officials and/or card readers used by the University. Lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately to the University Police Department at (585) 395-2226. For information on obtaining a replacement ID card and fees, visit the SUNY Brockport ID Card Information webpage.

The University and the Brockport Auxiliary Services Corporation (BASC) are not liable for any charges or other damages incurred if an ID card is lost and/or used by another person.

  1. University Police Officers have the authority to require proof of identity of anyone on the campus.
  2. Any University employees, including those from BASC or the Research Foundation, who are in a building they are authorized to be in when it is officially closed, and see someone in the building that they do not recognize, could ask for proof of identity and/or proof of authorization to be in that building. Alternatively, they may choose to report the unrecognized person to University Police without first requesting identification.
  3. If the person refuses to comply with the request, the requestor should immediately notify the University Police Department via (585) 395-2222.
  4. Any member of the University community who sees a person or evidence of a person in a University building or on University grounds acting suspiciously or performing a criminal or vandalous act is expected to report what is seen to University Police as soon as possible.
  5. Members of the University community are not expected to put themselves in jeopardy by cooperating in the implementation of this policy. If you are not sure of what you should do, or if a person refuses to cooperate in identifying themselves, retreat and call University Police.

Proof of Identity

  1. A current University ID is the best proof of identity.
  2. Persons associated with the University must have written permission to remove property from University premises, or proof of ownership, and should cooperate with University authorities who may question removal of property.
  3. Identification cards are to be issued to all students and employees. Individuals can order their ID via the GET app and have it mailed to your address on file.
