Since children learn from personal interaction and talking about their experiences, the teachers’ role is to provide an environment that promotes active learning. Active learning occurs when the following ingredients are present: materials for each child, manipulation of those materials, choice by the child of what to do with the materials, words chosen and used by the child, and support by adults or peers that helps the child think about his or her actions. Each room is physically set up to promote each child’s feeling of independence and competence. Areas are well defined, materials are easily accessible, and both are clearly labeled. The daily routine follows a predictable pattern and varies only with prior notice. Because of this predictability, the children are able to anticipate the sequence of events. This leads to feelings of control over both their environment and their time. By giving attention to each child’s needs and interests, the teachers are able to “customize” the curriculum and tailor a very personal educational fit.

Vanessa (Preschool I, Co-Lead)
- Vanessa transitioned from a part time employee to a full-time teacher in December, 2025. Vanessa has a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Brockport in psychology. She enjoys playing guitar and video games.

Julie (Preschool I, Co-Lead)
- Julie has been working for BCDC since winter 2023. She has been working with kids for the past 4 years but has experience caring for children since she was 10 from being an aunt. Julie loves playing basketball and soccer.

Andrea (Preschool II)
- Andrea began working at BCDC in 1999. She has received training under the Rochester Association for the Education of Young Children and holds a CDA (Child Development Associate). Andrea enjoys going on vacations to Florida.

Christina (Preschool II)
- Christina started working in BCDC in February 2023. She graduated with her nursing degree in 2020 and has been working for Rochester Pediatrics for the past 3 years. Christina also has an energetic young son.

Cassie (Preschool III)
- Cassie began work in the Preschool program in 2015. She has a master’s degree in Special Education and a bachelor’s in History, which brings a unique blend of knowledge and passion to her role. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Cassie is a proud dance mom and finds joy in the simple pleasures of Target runs.

Sammie (Preschool III)
- Sammie started at BCDC in February 2023. He has a childhood education degree for ages 1-6 and has been working within the childcare field since the age of 13. Sammie loves building Legos and taking kids on adventures.
