Looking to create a new social media accounts for a club, office, department, or school? Before creating social media channels, it’s important to consider a number of factors that will impact how you jumpstart your social media presence:
1. Know your purpose.
Ask yourself why you want to be on social media. Is it to share news, promote events, connect with your audience, or build school spirit? Knowing your goals will help you choose what to post and how to measure success.
2. Identify your audience.
Think about who you want to reach. Are you speaking to prospective students, students, parents, professors, alumni, or community members?
Knowing your audience helps you choose the right tone, language, and content. What interests them? What information do they need? Tailor your posts so they feel relevant and useful.
3. Choose the right platforms.
Not every social platform fits every purpose! Choose the ones that best match your goals and your audience.
-
Blue Sky: Similar to X but more community-focused and decentralized. It’s growing among creatives, educators, and journalists. Great for open discussion and sharing ideas.
-
Instagram or TikTok: Great for visuals, short videos, and connecting with younger audiences.
-
Facebook: Works well for community updates, parents, and events.
-
LinkedIn: Perfect for professional updates, networking, and highlighting academic achievements. Can allow you to connect with professors, alumni, and prospective students.
-
X (Twitter): Best for quick announcements or sharing news.
-
Threads: Ideal for quick, conversational posts and casual community building. It’s great if your audience enjoys discussions or prefers a friendlier alternative to X.
Start small — choose one or two platforms you can manage well and feel comfortable using before expanding.
4. Determine who has access.
It’s best to keep access with a few trusted hands. One or two admins can manage posting and settings, with one or two contributors helping create content. Others can share ideas or help monitor engagement without logging in. Keeping the team small ensures the account stays safe, organized, and always ready to share the best of our campus life.
5. Give Brockport a follow!
Before posting, make sure your department, club, or office follows SUNY Brockport’s official social media accounts. This keeps you connected to campus news and events, helps you stay on-brand, and lets you amplify official updates.
