Brockport Writers Forum: Tate Shaw
The artist, writer, and scholar of artists’ books will begin the Spring 2025 season of the Brockport Writers Forum.
Tate Shaw is an Associate Professor at SUNY Brockport, where he currently serves as Tower Fine Arts Gallery Director and Collections Manager. Before that, he ran SUNY Brockport’s Visual Studies Workshop, from which he also earned his MFA. Tate is a practitioner and scholar of artists’ books. His own books are housed in the Tate Modern in London, Yale Special Collections, and the Joan Flasch Artists’ Books Collection at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, among other prestigious collections. His scholarly and critical writing about artists’ books has appeared in a range of journals, including Afterimage and Aperture, with several of his most important essays collected in Blurred Library (Cuneiform Press, 2017).

Brockport Writers Forum: Jennifer Marie Brissett
A science fiction writer and software engineer joins the Brockport Writers Forum.
Jennifer Marie Brissett has been a software engineer/web developer and has owned and operated an independent bookstore in Brooklyn. She has a Master’s in Creative writing from the Stonecoast MFA Program (University of Southern Maine) and a bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Engineering (Electrical Engineering with a Concentration in Visual Art) from Boston University. She writes science fiction and has published stories in a variety of speculative fiction venues (e.g., Lightspeed and Uncanny). She has also published two SF novels, the most recent of which is Destroyer of Night (TOR 2021).

The Brockport Writers Forum: Sonya Bilocerkowycz
The author of the essay collection On Our Way Home from the Revolution: Reflections on Ukraine visits the Brockport Writers Forum.
Sonya Bilocerkowycz is a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellow and author of the collection of essays On Our Way Home from the Revolution: Reflections on Ukraine (Mad Creek Books/Ohio University Press, 2019). Her work has appeared in a range of literary magazines, including Guernica, the New York Review of Books and the Colorado Review. She holds an MFA from The Ohio State University and has been at SUNY Geneseo since 2019, where she serves as Director of Creative Writing.

The Brockport Writers Forum: Sarah Ruden
Translator, poet, and critic presents the Art of Fact Reading.
Sarah Ruden is perhaps the leading English translator of ancient literature of the West. Her translations of the Aeneid (2nd ed.; Yale UP 2021) and Aristophanes’s Lysistrata (Hackett, 2003) are especially renowned, and she has also translated Apuleius, the Gospels, Petronius, the Homeric Hymns, and more. In addition, she is an important literary critic, having written a literary biography of Vergil as well as books on biblical prose and the poetry of Sylvia Plath. She has won a range of awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship to fund her translation of Aeschylus’s Oresteia and a Whiting Creative Nonfiction grant that supported her translation of Augustine’s Confessions.

The Brockport Writers Forum: Josephine Ensign
The memoirist and professor of nursing joins the Brockport Writers Forum.
Josephine Ensign is a professor at the University of Washington School of Nursing in Seattle. Her scholarship focuses on health and social inequities and her essays have appeared in Silk Road, The Intima: A Journal of Narrative Medicine, and the Johns Hopkins Public Health Magazine, among other venues. She has published numerous books, including the medical memoir Catching Homelessness: A Nurse’s Story of Falling Through the Safety Net (She Writes Press, 2016), which won the American Journal of Nursing 2017 Book of the Year award for creative works. Her writing innovatively combines personal narrative reflection and discussions of public policy as it relates to healthcare.
