Unrecognized groups are unofficial Greek organizations that operate in a similar fashion to University-recognized fraternities and sororities. In most cases, unrecognized groups were University-recognized organizations before losing their recognition status due to inappropriate behavior and/or lack of compliance with University policy. Despite this loss of status, some members try to keep the organization alive as an unrecognized or underground group.
Unrecognized groups are potentially dangerous to students as they do not follow the policies and procedures that govern recognized groups. Students who participate in these organizations may experience hazing or other forms of inappropriate behavior that they wouldn’t experience with a recognized group. For this reason, SUNY Brockport advises all students to avoid associating with unrecognized groups. Parents of prospective Greek Life members are encouraged to talk with their student to make sure they are joining an organization that is recognized by SUNY Brockport.

All of these groups have been directed by the University and their National Headquarters to cease all operations on the SUNY Brockport campus. This includes the recruitment, education, and induction of new members as well as sponsorship of and/or recruitment in on-campus or off-campus activities. Students who fail to abide by this directive may receive Student Conduct charges for their actions. They may also be subject to litigation from the organization’s National Headquarters.
