Founded in 1922, Sigma is an international community of nurses dedicated to advancing global health through scholarship, leadership, and service. The organization includes more than 135,000 active members representing institutions of higher education and health systems in over 100 countries worldwide. Its mission, developing nurse leaders anywhere to improve healthcare everywhere, guides its commitment to education, research, and professional practice.
Membership in Sigma is by invitation only and is extended through more than 500 chapters at universities around the world. Undergraduate students invited to join must rank in the top 35 percent of their class and have successfully completed at least half of the required nursing curriculum. Graduate students must have completed at least one-quarter of their program of study.
