School of Nursing Hosts Inaugural Faculty Recognition Ceremony

Held on May 12, 2026, at the Alumni House, the event celebrated the School of Nursing’s faculty and staff for their excellence in leadership, teaching, scholarship, and service.

The evening marked an important milestone for the School of Nursing, establishing a new tradition dedicated to recognizing the passion, commitment, and impact of its community members.

Award Recipients

  • School of Nursing Person of the Year
    • Awarded to Dr. Beth Heavey for her exceptional leadership, service, and dedication to advancing the school’s mission and values.
  • Dean’s Shout Out Award
    • Presented to Ms. Janie Dennis for her steadfast support and behind-the-scenes contributions that make a meaningful difference for students, faculty, and programs.
  • Educator of the Year
    • Awarded to Dr. Paula Barbel for her innovative teaching practices, commitment to student success, and leadership in curriculum development.
  • Scholar of the Year
    • Dr. Susan Butler was honored for her impactful contributions to nursing research and evidence-based practice, advancing both the profession and academic scholarship.
  • Excellence in Service Award
    • Presented to Tammy McClung in recognition of her outstanding service, leadership, and commitment to the university, the profession, and the broader community.
  • Adjunct Faculty of the Year
    • Kristen Marino was recognized for her excellence in teaching, mentorship, and student engagement in both classroom and clinical settings.
  • Professional Staff/Administrative Assistant of the Year
    • Amy Schmitt was celebrated for her exceptional organizational skills, proactive problem-solving, and vital support to the School of Nursing.

Lastly, Dr. Kathleen Peterson, Founding Dean of the SUNY Brockport School of Nursing, was honored as the recipient of the Inaugural Dean’s Award. This recognition celebrates her visionary leadership and foundational contributions in establishing the School of Nursing, transforming an initial vision into a lasting legacy.
