Bio
Dr. Susan Lowey serves as Assistant Dean & Professor in the School of Nursing. Dr. Lowey has been with SUNY Brockport since 2012 and has worked with both juniors and seniors in the traditional BSN program, teaching Community Health Nursing, Nursing Research, and Care of Older Adults. She developed an elective End-of-Life Care course open to any relevant majors that is offered during winter session. She also previously taught Evaluating Research in the FNP Master’s program.
Brockport alumni, Dr. Lowey graduated with her BSN degree in nursing from SUNY Brockport in 1998. In 2006, she received her Master’s degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in population focused care from St. John Fisher University. This was followed by completion of her PhD in Health Practice Research from the University of Rochester in 2011. During her doctoral work, she received a Ruth L. Kirschstein Pre-Doctoral Fellowship from the National Institute of Nursing Research and an International Small Grant from Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing to complete her research study entitled, “Care Preferences of Individuals Living with Advanced Cardiac and Respiratory Illness”. For her post-doctoral work Dr. Lowey was one out of seven scholars in the country to be awarded the prestigious Claire M. Fagin Fellowship from the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Program, a partnership between the John A. Hartford Foundation and the American Academy of Nursing. She has also received a Sigma Theta Tau/Hospice & Palliative Care Foundation End of Life Nursing Research Grant and two Pre-Tenure Grant Awards from SUNY Brockport. Dr. Lowey is also board certified as a Nurse Educator (CNE) through the National League for Nursing and a Certified Hospice & Palliative Care Nurse (CHPN) through the Hospice & Palliative Credentialing Center.
The majority of her clinical practice has been as a community health hospice nurse providing care for dying patients and their loved ones. In addition to her national board certification as a CHPN, she is a certified ELNEC (End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium) trainer (Core and Geriatric). ELNEC is a national education initiative to improve palliative care that provides undergraduate and graduate nursing faculty with training in palliative care so they can teach this essential information to nursing students and practicing nurses. For all of her service in hospice and palliative care, she was awarded the FPCN (Fellow in Palliative Nursing) designation in March of 2018. Achieving fellow status is the highest honor within the hospice and palliative care community.
Dr. Lowey has held several leadership positions with national professional organizations. She served on the Board of Directors for the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Credentialing Center. She also served two three-year terms on the National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses Registered Nurse Examination Development Committee. This work involved developing and revising exam content for the national hospice and palliative nurse certification exam. She was a previous committee member on the Gerontological Nursing Educator Competencies Validation Panel through the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence. She also served as a faculty representative for Omicron Beta, Brockport’s Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society from 2012-2019. Dr. Lowey reviews manuscripts for the Journal of Hospice & Palliative Nursing, The Journal of Gerontological Nursing and Research in Nursing & Health. Additionally, she is a member of several professional organizations including: The Gerontological Society of America, Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society. She has successfully disseminated her work through numerous national, state, and local professional presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and has authored two books and several book chapters.
