Helpful tips:

1. Thank the student for being willing to share their concerns.
2. Assure the student that there are resources available that you are willing to help connect them with.
3. Assist the student with connecting to services:
   1. During business hours: Assist the student by calling the Counseling Center or walk them over.
   2. After hours:
      • Direct student to MyHazen to schedule an appointment online or instruct them to walk into Hazen the next available business day.
      • Encourage student to use the crisis text line by texting “Got5U” to 741-741 or call Lifeline at 988 for bridge support between Hazen business hours.
4. Reach out to Counseling Liaisons for any questions or follow up concerns.

Counseling Center

Some students are struggling to adapt to university life along with considerable family and personal problems. It is not uncommon for some students to experience high levels of stress and even become “distressed.” A “distressed student” may be dealing with a stressful situation, a crisis, or a mental health issue that may impact their academic ability. FERPA regulations generally allow universities and their employees to share observations and concerns about the behavior of students with university officials whose knowledge of the information is necessary for the health and safety of the student.

Signs of a “distressed student” may include:

• A sudden decline in a student’s academic performance or class attendance
• Difficulty in managing emotions and/or coping
• A noticeable decline in personal appearance or hygiene
• Coming to class under the influence

Some students may display concerning behaviors that may impact both inside and outside the classroom. Behaviors that interfere with the rights of other students, faculty, and staff to access an appropriate learning and work environment should be reported to the University.

Examples of concerning behaviors include:

• Acting out in class
• Yelling, arguing, and not responding to requests to calm down
• Intimidating or harassing behaviors

In dealing with such behaviors, remain calm in order to deescalate the situation. You may ask the student to leave the classroom or pull the student aside for a conversation, or call University Police if the behavior continues to escalate.

The purpose of this team is to provide a private, need-to-know, centralized means for early intervention of students of concern through collaboration with campus departments, faculty, and staff. The main responsibility of SBCT is to connect students to resources that will be helpful for their overall well-being. SBCT is not a crisis response team nor a disciplinary team.

The Student Behavioral Consultant Team

Contact University Police, the Hazen Center for Integrated Care, Student Conduct, and/or the Student Behavioral Consultant Team for individual or departmental training requests.

Disruptive students may be exhibiting behaviors that indicate the student is experiencing life events that challenge their ability to cope. The following examples of disruptive behaviors may warrant an immediate intervention by the University.

Examples include:

• Highly disruptive behavior (verbal hostility, aggression, disregard for classroom decorum and expected conduct, etc.); failure to comply with corrective feedback
• Inability to communicate clearly (garbled, pressured speech; disorganized, confused, or rambling thoughts)
• Loss of contact with reality (seeing or hearing things which others cannot see or hear; irrational beliefs or fears that others may be conspiring against them)
• Suicidal thoughts and/or threats to harm others (may be communicated orally or in written formats through email, assignments, or on social networks)

How should I respond to disruptive student behavior?

• If immediate safety is a concern call University Police at (585) 395-2222.
• If immediate safety is not a concern, and you are comfortable in assisting the student, attempt to deescalate the situation, offer to find someone to assist them with their concern. Consider referring or walking the student to the Counseling Center in Hazen Hall, and/or call counseling at (585) 395-2414.
• Keep your supervisor informed and document the interactions you had with the student of concern.

Notify the SBCT via the reporting form

• Listen and reflect back
• Validate their feelings what you are hearing
• Use quiet, calm tone of voice
• Provide choices
• Be empathetic
• Join in finding a solution

Some examples of what to say:

• “How can I help”
• “Tell me more about what’s going on”
• “I want to understand how best to assist you……”

University faculty and staff are NOT confidential resources and are required to report to the Title IX Coordinator any information the student discloses of sex discrimination, which includes gender-based and sexual orientation discrimination, sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking.
