Moderator: David Buyan

David Buyan has been involved in student leadership since middle school, consistently focusing on representation and access. In high school, he served as a student representative to the Rochester City School District Board of Education, where he brought forward student concerns, participated in district discussions, and contributed to conversations about equity and resource allocation.

As a Borlaug Scholar at Cornell University, he worked on a project examining the relationship between food insecurity and educational access in India. His work focused on how economic and agricultural instability affect school attendance and long-term academic outcomes, with an emphasis on practical, community-informed approaches.

In college, he continues his commitment to institutional leadership and governance. He serves as Chief Justice of his student government, overseeing the interpretation of governing documents and ensuring procedural fairness within the organization. He is also the Vice President of the Muslim Student Association, where he helps coordinate programming, supports community-building initiatives, and represents the organization in campus-wide engagement efforts. In addition, he serves on multiple university committees, contributing student perspectives to discussions on policy, campus climate, and academic affairs.

His academic interests center on urban psychology, the epigenetic effects of stress in urban environments, and industrial-organizational psychology within higher education and hospital systems. His work and research interests are grounded in understanding how institutional structures and environmental conditions shape individual outcomes, particularly for students from low-income and underrepresented backgrounds.
