Recap of 2026 Douglass Day Celebration

Drake Library celebrated the legacy of Frederick Douglass by hosting a Transcribe-a-thon where students, faculty, staff, and friends tried their hands at transcription as part of a crowdsourcing event on February 13, 2026.

The work of Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), social reformer, abolitionist, and an advocate of women’s rights has special resonance in Rochester, NY.

This transcribe-a-thon helped participants explore and transcribe items from the Coloured Conventions Project. Contributing to open access scholarship helps future researchers study these important archival sources. Close to a dozen attendees attended the in-person event, with others working off-site. SUNY Brockport completed over 100 transcription items.

The Transcribe 2026 website is still open, and additional contributions can be made at any time.
